After being forced to live temporarily for three days due to continuous rainfall and flood risks, three families from the Sada (Musahar) community in Lakshmipur Portaha of Triyuga Municipality–13 have finally returned to their homes.
Following nearly 14 hours of relentless rain on Sunday night, flooding and land erosion had put the settlement of these three Sada families at serious risk. As the situation worsened, the ward office and local police intervened to relocate them to a neighbor’s house for safety.
“We had to move them to a nearby safe location in the middle of the night once the rain didn’t stop,” said Ward Chairperson Navin Chaudhary. According to him, the three families include 13 members, including children and the elderly.
As the rainfall subsided, the families gradually started returning to their homes from Tuesday. However, the risk of land erosion still remains, and Chaudhary stressed the need for a long-term solution for the upcoming monsoon.
Though immediate efforts by locals and the ward office helped avert a life-threatening crisis, the houses of the Sada community families are still not entirely safe. “The land has sunk in some areas, and if another heavy rainfall occurs, the same problem could recur,” a local resident expressed concern.
There is now a growing demand for the government and local authorities to develop long-term plans to ensure the safe housing of the affected families.
