Sumitra Suvedi Bhandari, the Chief of Madhesh Province, has been appointed as the acting Chief of Koshi Province for a few days due to the foreign visit of the current chief, Parshuram Khapung.

President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed Bhandari as the acting Chief of Koshi Province on Sunday. According to Shailaja Regmi Bhattarai, spokesperson for the President’s Office at Sheetal Niwas, the appointment was made on the recommendation of the Government of Nepal and the Council of Ministers.

Khapung is scheduled to travel to Malaysia in the coming days as the chief guest of the Fourth Convention of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Malaysia. In view of his absence, the President’s Office decided to assign Bhandari the responsibilities of Koshi Province.

Under the federal system, an alternative arrangement is required to ensure the continuity of provincial operations in the absence of the provincial chief. This decision by the President is therefore seen as a procedural and formal step in line with constitutional provisions.
