Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has clarified that the recent shift of media registration to the District Administration Office should not be unnecessarily interpreted as an “attack on democracy.”

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at the Parliament premises, Minister Gurung urged not to spread confusion regarding the matter. “It is not logical to claim that democracy has been undermined just because the registration authority has been shifted from one office to another,” he said. “According to the current legal framework, registration must be done at the designated office, and it is appropriate to follow the procedure accordingly.”

He explained that although media outlets were previously registered through the Department of Information, the new legal provision mandates registration through the District Administration Office, and it should be treated as a procedural matter.

“It is the government’s responsibility to draft laws, and those laws clearly specify where registration should take place,” said Minister Gurung. “Laws are equal for all. Every citizen must proceed responsibly in accordance with them.”

He further stated that adhering to communication-related policies and regulations is an integral part of democratic practice, urging all to take the change in the registration process positively.
