The leadership of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party in Bagmati Province has undergone a major shift. In an internal election held on Wednesday, Indra Baniya defeated the sitting Chief Minister, Bahadur Singh Lama, to become the new leader of the party.

Competition, Defeat, and Comeback

  • In the internal contest for parliamentary party leader, Baniya secured 22 votes.

  • Incumbent Chief Minister Lama managed to receive only 14 votes.

  • One vote was invalidated.

  • Baniya achieved a clear victory over Lama with a margin of 8 votes.

Previous Defeat, Present Victory

This marks the second time the two leaders have competed for the position.
In their first contest, held on December 28, 2022 (Poush 13, 2079 BS), Lama had won with 21 votes, while Baniya had received 16.
Nearly two years later, Baniya has successfully organized a majority within the party, overtaking the same rival he lost to before.

Political Message

Baniya’s victory signals a new equation in the province’s power structure.
With the Chief Minister himself losing the position of parliamentary party leader, there is growing curiosity about how the internal balance of power within the Nepali Congress will now evolve.
