The Madhesh Province Government has launched key initiatives focusing on the safety and well-being of its citizens through insurance coverage, disaster compensation, and structural support for senior citizens. Minister for Sports and Social Welfare, Pramod Jaiswal, announced that the government has implemented an insurance scheme providing relief of NPR 1 million (Rs. 10 lakh) to families of individuals who lose their lives due to accidents or natural disasters.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the first Provincial Convention of the Senior Citizens’ Federation, Madhesh Province, held in Birgunj on Saturday, Minister Jaiswal clarified that the insurance coverage applies not only within the province but also extends to any part of Nepal or India where residents of Madhesh may face accidental deaths. “This provision has been ensured through the active efforts of the provincial government,” he said.
Disaster Compensation Based on Damage Assessment
In addition to life insurance, Minister Jaiswal stated that the provincial government, in coordination with insurance companies, has arranged for compensation ranging from NPR 50,000 to NPR 520,000 for citizens whose homes are damaged by natural disasters. The amount will be provided based on the severity of the damage assessed.
Budget Allocated for Elderly Homes; Plan to Document Experiences
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to effectively implementing programs for senior citizens through the Ministry of Social Welfare. He revealed that NPR 2.5 million (Rs. 25 lakh) has been allocated in the current fiscal year’s budget for the construction of an elderly home. “Senior citizens are not only national treasures but also rich sources of experience. Additional budget will be allocated if needed,” he added.
He further informed that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Senior Citizens’ Federation, is preparing to publish a book compiling the experiences and wisdom of senior citizens.
Active Participation, Recommendations, and Best Wishes at the Convention
The event, chaired by Jagdish Sharma, Coordinator of the Senior Citizens’ Federation, Madhesh Province, saw significant participation from various organizations. KC Lamichhane, Central Account Committee Coordinator of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Madhesh Province President Shyam Banjara, Red Cross Parsa President Brikishore Patel, and social activist Nezamuddin Samani were among the key speakers. They extended their best wishes and urged all three tiers of government to utilize the valuable experience of senior citizens in nation-building.
The event also saw the notable presence of members from the Federation of Nepali Journalists Parsa, Nepal Press Union Parsa, local journalists, and social activists. All participants appreciated the success of the convention and expressed their continued commitment to collaboration and support for senior citizens.
