There has been a significant decline in road accident-related fatalities in Sarlahi. According to the latest data published by the District Traffic Police Office, Sarlahi, the number of deaths caused by road accidents decreased by 23% in the fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25) compared to the previous year.
While 73 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2080/81, the number dropped to 56 in 2081/82, as reported by the traffic police. However, despite the decrease in fatalities, the number of injuries remains a matter of concern. In the most recent fiscal year, there were 1,037 accidents resulting in 501 serious and 1,180 minor injuries. In contrast, the previous year recorded 614 serious and 504 minor injuries.
According to Rajosh Ghimire, Chief of the District Traffic Police, various mechanisms have been actively implemented to reduce traffic accidents. Among these are regular inspections, action against overloaded vehicles, mechanical testing, and awareness programs.
“We are focusing not just on legal enforcement but also on public awareness,” said Ghimire. However, he noted that the expansion of roads and ongoing blacktopping has introduced new challenges, such as overspeeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
In the past fiscal year alone, action was taken against 20,034 vehicles for traffic rule violations, generating a revenue of NPR 20,218,520, according to the Traffic Police Office.
While this indicates a strengthening of the traffic monitoring system, there remains a need for increased public awareness at the local level, sustainable road infrastructure, and improved traffic management through advanced technologies.
