To curb the growing problem of drug abuse in Madhesh Province, the police administration has launched a new strategic campaign. The Provincial Police Office has officially implemented a program titled “Search and Rehabilitation Campaign for Drug Users,” signaling its intent to expand the initiative on a broader scale.
During a special briefing held on Friday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Govinda Thapaliya informed police chiefs of all eight districts and their subordinate units about the campaign’s launch. He stated that border areas will be given special priority, with increased surveillance measures.
Under the campaign, drug testing centers will be established at major border checkpoints. Using drug test kits, authorities will identify whether individuals have consumed drugs. Additionally, data on youths frequently crossing the borders will be collected to strengthen monitoring systems.
Furthermore, drug users will receive short-term awareness training at border points. These sessions, lasting about an hour, will include record-keeping of participants, who will then be monitored over the long term, according to the police.
The police have emphasized that the campaign is not limited to control measures alone but is also focused on rehabilitation and reintegration. In coordination with the provincial government, local bodies, and various organizations, programs related to treatment, skill development, sports, and employment will be implemented.
Meanwhile, groups involved in drug trafficking and illegal trade, as well as pharmacies suspected of malpractice, will be kept under strict surveillance. Authorities have warned that legal action will be taken against those found guilty.
