A tragic incident unfolded in Lahan Municipality–5, Siraha, after a dispute over an alleged theft led to the death of a woman on Monday morning.
According to police, 50-year-old Nurjahan Khatun, wife of Mo Sadiq Miya, died after being brutally assaulted by locals following accusations of shop theft near the Khutti Khola area in Partitol.
Witnesses said the dispute began when Khatun accused a youth of stealing items from her grocery shop. The youth’s family members, angered by the accusation, allegedly attacked her collectively, leading to severe injuries.
Locals rushed the critically injured Khatun to Ram Kumar Sharda Uma Prasad Murarka Provincial Hospital in Lahan, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramesh Bahadur Pal, spokesperson for the Siraha District Police Office, confirmed that four individuals, including three women, have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
“The body has been sent to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, for post-mortem examination,” DSP Pal said.
Locals reported that the deceased operated a small grocery shop near the Chhath Ghat along the Khutti Khola riverbank. On Saturday morning, she had complained to a youth’s grandfather after suspecting the boy of theft. Enraged by her accusation, the family members reportedly beat her mercilessly.
Police have launched a detailed investigation, suspecting that more people might have been involved in the assault.
