In connection with the shooting incident that occurred on the night of Shrawan 30 (August 14) in Haripurwa Municipality–6, Sarlahi, which claimed one life, police have arrested the accused Dhirendra Rai, also known as Dharmendra Rai.

According to police, 40-year-old Rampukar Yadav was sitting in front of his house at around 8:20 p.m. when two individuals on a motorcycle attacked him. Dharmendra, who was riding the motorcycle bearing registration number BR 30 AG 2354, had an accomplice seated behind him, who pulled out a pistol and fired at Yadav’s head.

Yadav, who was critically injured by the gunshot, was immediately rushed to Janaki Healthcare in Parsa, Samsi Rural Municipality, Mahottari. However, doctors pronounced him dead during treatment.

After the shooting, Dharmendra and his companion fled on the motorcycle, which later met with an accident along the Haripurwa–7 Basantpur–Banke–Sangrampur road section. Following the accident, the shooter seated at the back managed to escape, while Dharmendra was apprehended in an injured condition. Police took him to Lalbandi Model Hospital and later referred him to Provincial Hospital Janakpur for treatment. After being discharged on Shrawan 31 (August 16), he was kept in police custody.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Dharmendra admitted to carrying out the attack due to a personal dispute with Rampukar’s son, Sumit Rai Yadav. Further investigation led police to his rented room in Malangawa–9, from where they recovered a homemade pistol and a used cartridge.

Police investigation has also uncovered Dharmendra’s past involvement in another heinous crime. On the night of Asoj 10 (September 26, 2023), he had opened fire at his own house, targeting his wife, Chitralekha Kumari Yadav, and his father, Ramdinesh Rai. In that incident, Chitralekha was killed on the spot while his father was seriously injured. At the time, his father had filed a complaint at the Sarlahi District Police Office, accusing Dharmendra of murder and attempted murder. Since then, Dharmendra had been absconding.

Police have stated that both the Rampukar murder case and the previous complaint are now being investigated simultaneously. Meanwhile, search operations are ongoing to trace the individual who was with Dharmendra on the motorcycle and fired the fatal shot before fleeing the scene.
