Once known for his “Singham”-style policing, Sub-Inspector (SI) Baidyanath Das has now fallen into disgrace. He has been suspended following the release of an audio recording allegedly revealing his involvement in financial dealings with local smugglers.
SI Das, who was serving at the Area Police Office in Hirapur, Sarlahi, was reportedly caught on tape conspiring with a well-known smuggler in the district. After the audio surfaced, the Sarlahi District Police Office swiftly initiated disciplinary action.
According to police sources, SI Das had asked for NPR 18,000 from notorious smuggler Rajiv Yadav through one of his subordinates, police constable Santosh Yadav, in exchange for facilitating smuggling activities. The leaked phone conversation containing this alleged demand has caused a stir within the police organization.
DSP Saroj Rai, spokesperson for the Sarlahi District Police Office, confirmed the incident. He stated that the audio evidence was forwarded to the Provincial Police Office in Janakpur and then to Police Headquarters, recommending Das’s immediate suspension to prevent evidence tampering.
“Action was initiated immediately after the audio was leaked,” said DSP Rai. “Such incidents damage the reputation of the entire police force. To ensure an impartial investigation, SI Das has been suspended.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, SI Das had earned a reputation in Birgunj for his strict, fearless policing—drawing comparisons to Bollywood’s fictional ‘Singham’ character. At that time, he was admired and trusted by the public. However, this recent scandal has severely tarnished his image. He will now have to face a departmental investigation.
