In a gesture of humanitarian support, the Division Forest Office of Dhanusha has distributed free timber to 23 families in Kamala Municipality who were rendered homeless by a fire incident a few months ago.

At a special program held on Friday, the Division Forest Office provided each affected family with 16 to 18 cubic feet of timber of the Sal species, free of charge. According to Divisional Forest Officer Binod Singh, this is the first time since the implementation of federalism that timber has been directly distributed to disaster-affected citizens.

“The timber was distributed to assist the reconstruction efforts of families who lost their homes in the fire,” Singh stated.

Present at the timber distribution program were Madhesh Province Minister for Forests and Environment Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Provincial Forest Secretary Uddhav Bahadur Ghimire, Director of the Forest Directorate Jagannath Jaiswal, Kamala Municipality Mayor along with other local representatives and forest officials.

Speaking at the event, Minister Yadav emphasized, “The forest is our shared resource. It falls under the rights of the people. It is only natural that it should be used in the interest of the people during times of disaster.”

Secretary Ghimire added, “According to laws, policies, and values, forest resources can be utilized for human welfare. The provincial government will continue such relief distribution programs in the future.”

This local initiative to socially utilize forest resources signals the beginning of a people-centric forest administration in the province.
