A gang involved in cheating the general public by showing fake gold and foreign currency has been arrested in Kathmandu.
The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku, arrested three people after special surveillance. Those arrested are Bimal Tamang (age 47) from Dudhauli Municipality-10, Sindhuli; Lal Bahadur Ghising (age 39) from Dudhauli-12; and Bhakt Bahadur Gadhal Bik (age 39) from Mjhuvagadhi-14, Khotang. Tamang currently lives in Mahalaxmi-6, Lalitpur, Ghising resides in Budhanilkantha Baluwakhani, and Gadhal lives in Lokanthali, Bhaktapur.
According to the police, Tamang and Ghising used to lure people in different parts of the valley by claiming they could provide gold and foreign currency at cheap prices, then cheat them by taking their real jewelry and cash under the pretense of trading fake gold.
Spokesperson SP Angur Jisi said preliminary investigations revealed that they cheated at least six people in Kathmandu Valley. “They used to show fake gold and steal victims’ jewelry and money,” Jisi said. “They also cheated people by claiming to sell foreign currencies such as Saudi Riyal at low prices.”
The police team also seized 17 grams and 600 milligrams of a yellow metal resembling gold, four pieces of fake gold bars, and a scooter with the number plate Na 57 Pa 1516.
Bhakt Bahadur Gadhal was arrested for buying gold that was stolen through fraud. Necessary investigations against all three are underway through the Kathmandu District Police Office, the police said.
