Gaushala, Mahottari – In a horrific incident in Gaushala, Mahottari, a man who was set on fire by his neighbor has died from his injuries. The accused, who had fled the scene, has been arrested from India.

The incident took place in Gaushala Municipality–4, Rajkhor, on Thursday, Asar 26 (July 11) at around 11 AM. According to police, 30-year-old Surendra Sah poured petrol on his 50-year-old neighbor, Baliram Sah, and set him ablaze. After committing the crime, Surendra fled the area but was arrested on Thursday by a team from the Area Police Office, Gaushala, while hiding in India.

According to Baliram’s wife, Kumari Devi, the attack occurred while her husband was resting on a cot under a tree near their home. Surendra suddenly appeared and poured petrol on him before setting him on fire. She said there was no one nearby at the time, so the rescue was delayed. A young boy sitting at a nearby shop witnessed the incident and tried to help, but failed and had to call for assistance.

Baliram Sah, who suffered severe burns, was initially taken to a local health center for first aid and later referred to Kathmandu for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday during treatment, according to the Area Police Office, Gaushala.

Police reports reveal that Surendra Sah had returned from foreign employment just two months ago. According to local residents, he was involved in drug abuse and frequently quarreled with neighbors. A local youth stated that Surendra committed the act under the influence of drugs.

The gruesome attack has created a climate of fear in the village. Baliram’s wife, Kumari Devi, has demanded the strictest possible punishment for the perpetrator. The deceased is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.

Police say further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
