The Birgunj Customs Office, regarded as the country’s largest customs checkpoint, has reported collecting more than Rs. 243.82 billion in revenue during the fiscal year 2082/83. Although the office failed to meet its revenue target, it achieved nearly 90 percent of the total target.

According to Information Officer Uday Singh Bista, a revenue collection target of Rs. 273.37 billion had been set for the last fiscal year. He informed that the office collected 89.19 percent of the targeted revenue.

The Department of Customs had set a target of collecting Rs. 588.25 billion in revenue through all customs offices across the country. Of that total, Birgunj Customs alone accounted for 41.45 percent, confirming the office’s significant role in the country’s overall revenue collection.

Revenue collection witnessed fluctuations throughout the fiscal year. In the first month of the fiscal year, Shrawan, the office collected Rs. 18.44 billion in revenue, which increased to Rs. 20.74 billion in Bhadra. Although collections declined somewhat in Ashoj and Kartik, the office stated that revenue collection improved again from Mangsir onward.

Revenue collection remained comparatively high during the final four months of the fiscal year. According to the published details, the office collected Rs. 22.82 billion in Chaitra, Rs. 21.74 billion in Baisakh, Rs. 22.32 billion in Jestha, and Rs. 22.04 billion in Asar.

The Birgunj Customs Office has continued to play a leading role in the country’s revenue management as the main gateway for import and export trade. Despite fluctuations in economic activities, the office stated that it has succeeded in maintaining the largest share of the nation’s revenue collection.
