Birgunj
As the water crisis in Parsa district reaches critical levels, political parties have jointly demanded that Birgunj Metropolitan City and its surrounding areas be officially declared drought-affected.
A multi-party meeting held in Birgunj on Tuesday formally decided to urge the federal government to declare Birgunj and Parsa as drought-stricken and to immediately provide a special relief package.
Drought, Dry Tube Wells, and Water Shortage
Due to a prolonged dry spell over the past month, most tube wells in Parsa district have dried up. Residents in various neighborhoods of Birgunj are facing a daily water crisis. The multi-party meeting criticized the efforts of the Water Supply Corporation and the metropolitan authority as inadequate and called on the government to take concrete steps to resolve the issue.
Joint Delegation and Multi-Party Monitoring Planned
To address the crisis, the meeting decided to send a joint delegation of political parties to hold discussions with Birgunj Metropolitan City, Nepal Water Supply Corporation, and other concerned stakeholders. It was also announced that the parties will conduct joint monitoring of the government agencies’ ongoing efforts to resolve the drinking water crisis.
Appeal to the Provincial Government
The meeting also resolved to appeal to the Madhesh Provincial Government for a relief package. According to Mahesh Das, UML Parsa secretary, “At such times, both federal and provincial governments must coordinate to provide relief to the people.”
Political Unity Amid Crisis
The meeting was chaired by Acting President of Nepali Congress Parsa, Ramnarayan Prasad Kurmi, and attended by senior leaders from CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Centre), Janata Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Swatantra Party, CPN (Unified Socialist), Janamat Party, and JSP Nepal.
