The internal leadership conflict within the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) has intensified. A gathering organized by party patron Resham Lal Chaudhary has selected his father, Lalbir Chaudhary, as the new chairperson of the party through a recently concluded meeting.
The two-day assembly removed Resham Chaudhary’s wife, Ranjita Shrestha, from the party chair position and also expelled her from the party.
Lalbir Chaudhary, the directly elected federal Member of Parliament from Bardiya-2, has now entered an active role in NUP’s internal politics. This incident clearly reflects a redefinition of roles within Resham Chaudhary’s own family.
Meanwhile, Ranjita Shrestha, who has been ousted from the chair position, does not appear ready to step back. She has sent a 24-hour clarification notice to the party’s parliamentary leader, Gangaram Chaudhary, accusing him of violating the party statute.
Shrestha claims that she had already informed the party about her inability to participate actively in party affairs due to health and personal reasons. She has further accused the group of making decisions without convening a formal meeting or following due process.
This marks an open power struggle within NUP. On one side, a new party structure seems to be taking shape under Resham Chaudhary’s guidance, while on the other side, Ranjita Shrestha still insists she remains the legitimate chair.
Political analysts view the recent developments within NUP as a “power struggle within the family,” which may affect both the party’s stability and effectiveness in the coming days.
