Tikaram Syangtang, a Maoist leader from Sindhuli and the ward committee chair of Marin Rural Municipality–4, has been sent to prison after being convicted in a motorcycle theft case. He was found guilty by the court in connection with the theft of two Pulsar motorcycles that occurred three years ago.
Syangtang was known as an influential figure within the CPN (Maoist Centre) and a close confidant of Rajan Dahal, the federal lawmaker elected from Sindhuli. He also served as the chairperson of the School Management Committee of Khayarsal Secondary School in the area.
Arrested in 2022 (2079 BS) on charges of motorcycle theft, Syangtang had spent 25 days in custody before being released on bail. However, the District Court of Sindhuli found him guilty and handed down a sentence. Although he appealed the verdict at the Patan High Court, he lost the case there as well and subsequently went into hiding.
Since being declared guilty, Syangtang had been living underground for an extended period. He was recently apprehended and presented before the District Court on Wednesday. Following his appearance, he was sent to prison the same day, according to Vidur Prasad Koirala, registrar of the District Court, Sindhuli.
The two stolen motorcycles were both 220cc Pulsar models. As per the court’s decision, Syangtang will now serve a fixed term in prison.
Despite his political background, proximity to a sitting MP, and involvement in local social leadership, Syangtang’s criminal involvement has raised serious questions about the image and ethical standing of the Maoist party in the local communit
