The 43rd Memorial Day of Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister and a leading figure in the democratic movement, is being observed today with various events across the country.

Born on Ashar 21, 1976 B.S., BP Koirala passed away on Shrawan 6, 2039 B.S. To commemorate his legacy, various political parties including the Nepali Congress, social organizations, and civil society are organizing a range of programs such as tribute ceremonies, discussions, blood donation drives, and tree plantation events.

From early morning, large crowds of leaders and cadres have gathered at BP Smriti Bhawan, BP Museum, and several Nepali Congress offices in Kathmandu. The Nepali Congress is hosting a special program at its central office in Sanepa, where top party leaders have delivered speeches highlighting BP Koirala’s ideologies, philosophy, and contributions.

BP Koirala became Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister through the general elections of 2015 B.S. However, after only 18 months in office, King Mahendra dissolved the parliament and imprisoned him. Koirala was not only a political leader but also a celebrated literary figure. His works such as Sumnima, Teen Ghumti, Modiain, and Hitler ra Yahudi are regarded as major contributions to Nepali literature.

Schools, universities, and youth organizations across the country are also marking the day by organizing discussions on BP’s political thoughts and essay competitions.

As the nation remembers BP Koirala—considered a cornerstone of Nepal’s democratic history—his legacy continues to inspire dialogues and reviews about inclusive, just, and prosperous governance. This day is seen as a source of motivation toward building a better Nepal.
